From Arisan to Boardroom: How I Leverage Women Networks for Career Growth in Indonesia

Throughout my career, I've experienced firsthand the incredible power of women's networks, particularly in Indonesia. One fascinating parallel I often draw upon is between traditional gatherings like "arisan" and modern professional networks. Both are vibrant platforms where women naturally empower each other, opening doors and accelerating mutual success.

Arisan, deeply ingrained in Indonesian culture, represents much more than financial pooling—it's about trust, community, and mutual support. I've embraced these very principles in my professional life, tapping into networks that offer mentorship, resources, and opportunities for growth. According to McKinsey’s Women Matter report (2023), women who actively engage in these networks are twice as likely to ascend into leadership roles, something I've observed repeatedly in my own circles.

A personal example that profoundly influenced me was meeting Ibu Neneng Goenadi, who was the Country Director of Accenture when I was just starting as an analyst and is now the Country Managing Director for Grab Indonesia. Despite the vastness of the organization, Ibu Neneng stood out because she remembered and acknowledged almost all the female analysts, including myself. Her genuine care, attention, and consistent championing of women deeply inspired me. Even today, during International Women's Month, she continues to demonstrate her commitment by maintaining our connection and regularly engaging in conversations. I find it incredibly meaningful and amusing that someone of her stature still actively remembers and supports me.

Interestingly, despite Grab's competitive dynamic with Gojek, which funded Halodoc where I was CMO, Ibu Neneng consistently maintained a supportive and positive approach. She continued to offer advice and mentorship, embodying the idea that sharing and caring transcend competition. I've leveraged professional communities to connect with inspiring mentors like Ibu Neneng, secure valuable partnerships, and unlock new opportunities that have significantly advanced my career. Transitioning from informal social networks to structured professional groups has profoundly influenced my trajectory, enabling deeper collaboration and amplifying my impact across sectors.

The rise of women-centric coworking spaces, digital communities, and industry-specific networks mirrors the supportive and collaborative spirit of arisan. I've found immense value in engaging actively with these networks, contributing my insights and learning from others to shape a more inclusive professional environment.

As I look toward the future, I firmly believe the success and growth of Indonesian women leaders will depend heavily on our ability to strategically leverage these networks. Embracing and enhancing this culturally rooted practice is not only beneficial for individual careers—it has the potential to transform the professional landscape for generations to come.

On that note- I am always here if you want to reach out!
